BelfastSouth Raises Serious Concerns Over NIHE Hope Street Development Update

BelfastSouth has issued a formal response to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s Spring 2026 Hope Street Newsletter, raising serious concerns that the objections and feedback from the Sandy Row community have not been meaningfully addressed.

While we welcome continued communication from NIHE, BelfastSouth remains concerned that the latest update does not show evidence of any substantial changes to the proposals following repeated concerns raised by local residents, community organisations and stakeholders.

The key concerns include the proposed housing mix, the limited provision of family-sized social housing, the continued use of broad and unclear housing figures, and the lack of clear acknowledgement of the objections already submitted by the local community.

BelfastSouth believes the Hope Street site represents a major opportunity to deliver long-term, sustainable regeneration for Sandy Row. Publicly owned land should be used to meet genuine local need, including more family-sized social housing and clearer support for existing and future residents.

We are also calling for greater transparency from NIHE around all referenced Sandy Row housing schemes, including exact locations, housing types, unit numbers and delivery timescales.

BelfastSouth remains committed to constructive engagement and supports genuine regeneration that benefits the local community. However, regeneration must be community-led, transparent and reflective of actual local housing need.
